I'm a little confused as to your characters' moral stances on abortion. It's ok to "get rid of" babies not yet born, but not birth them and get rid of them? No compassion there for someone in the same circumstances? Her dad's not upset that she's had 2 abortions, but was upset with her mother for not wanting her child? Doesn't make sense.

Her dad was upset about her mother birthing her and leaving her in the outhouse to die because (1) she was HIS child, and (2) her mother told him "I tried to kill your baby", which infuriated him. He also came to like her because his mother visited him at the reform farm and always brought her along, and she was a pretty baby. Also, this happened in 1943, when morals were a lot stricter and abortion wasn't heard of too much.
When she had her 2 abortions it was in 1956 and 1957, she was about 2 months along, and her dad wasn't upset about it because they weren't far enough along for him to consider them "babies", and actually, he didn't care what she did, she could do whatever she wanted to do. He was upset with the mother because the mother tried to kill HIS child after his child was born at 9 months.

Also her dad was in prison when she had the 2 abortions, so he never knew about it until she brought it up to her mother.
